Email Savvy Assessment

 

Here is a fun assessment for you to check your own "email savviness!"

 

Rate yourself 1 to 5, with 5 meaning strongly agree, and 1 meaning Strongly Disagree.

 

  1. I am not distracted when email arrives in my inbox

 

  1. I check my email no more than 4 times during the workday

 

  1. After I check my email, I either handle everything in my inbox or move it to files that allow me to manage my work.  My Inbox is empty.

 

  1. I place emails in folders, and use folders to manage my work.

 

  1. I regularly purge my sent mail and folders.

 

  1. I avoid letting my email pull me away from more important tasks.

 

  1. Email does not stress me out.

 

  1. My “automatic send/receive” is either turned off or set to at least 90 minutes.

 

  1. I close or minimize my email when I am not working on it.

 

  1. My emails contain only one subject.

 

  1. My emails have very detailed subject lines.

 

  1. My emails contain the main point or request in the first 2 sentences.

 

  1. My emails are brief and to the point.

 

 

 

  1. I use Tasks, Reminders, and Flags to manage my work

 

  1. I attach an autosignature containing all of my contact information on every email

 

  1. I copy only the people who really need to have the information

 

  1. I avoid creating work bubbles with the amount of emails I send (e.g. sending all emails on a weekend)

 

  1. I avoid using email to initiate urgent issues.

 

  1. I avoid using email to communicate sensitive issues, “constructive” criticism, or controversial/argumentative subjects.

 

  1. I use the phone, meetings or personal visits when communications can be complicated, confusing or misinterpreted.

85-100:            You ARE “Email Savvy!”

70-84:              You are well on your way to “Saviness!”

50-69:              Your email habits can be getting in your way.  Time to make some changes to move toward “Saviness!”

35-49               Your email habits are getting in your way.  Take action to own your email!

21-34:              Your email habits are hurting you and possibly those around you, whether you know it or not.  Start now, to change the way you manage your email, and you’ll find more hours in each day!

20                    Duh.  That’s the minimum score you can get!
